Hands-on
workshop in running a Bed
& Breakfast
bnb-central
conducts a three day hands-on workshop for aspiring Bed & Breakfast
operators, and those already there. This workshop is ideal for those contemplating entry into this industry prior to buying a property or
converting an existing one, and for those who wish to update their
knowledge.
This
workshop is held at carefully selected Bed & Breakfasts located
near where the student lives.
The
course structure enables aspirants to gain experience in the day-to-day
functions of operating and managing a Bed & Breakfast.
The
course covers the following:
Commercial issues: how to test the viability of your business
proposition by doing a feasibility study, how to manage your B&B,
how to do a business plan (for those already there), compliance areas
such as Local Government and insurance, marketing, PR and how the Star
rating system works.
Office
duties: handling reservations,
booking deposits and cancellations, converting telephone inquiries into
bookings, processing credit card transactions, checking-in and out
procedures, guest book and confirmation letters, good record keeping.
Housekeeping: bedroom and bathroom cleaning checklists, laundry
management, the difference between tidiness and cleanliness, and the
use of environmentally friendly cleaning agents.
Meal
preparation: Food and hygiene issues, meal planning, breakfast
preparation and presentation, picnic baskets, dealing with special
diets and other food requirements.
In order to obtain a high standard of personal attention from our
tutors we restrict the number of aspirants per workshop to eight
people, but often cater for lessor numbers.

Fee inclusive of two nights accommodation:

Bed & Breakfast Workshop
(lectures) :
The workshop course covers two prime sections and include subjects
listed below.
Part A: Challenges participants as to their readiness to enter the Bed and Breakfast business. It will allow them to assess the level of commitment they are prepared to make in their venture.
1 - Am I Suitable:
Being your own boss, are you suitable, are you and your family suitable, defining the dream
2 - Is my Property Suitable:
First impressions, signage, structural adjustments-exterior-interior, local authority requirements, furniture.
3 - Who is my Market:
Australian tourism-some facts, identifying your market, seasonality, decision-making.
4 - Business Fundamentals:
Being prepared, financing your enterprise, building & development applications, your local authority, insurance.
Part B: Introduces the daily issues that confront Bed & Breakfast operators. It also outlines how to run a B&B efficiently and successfully.
1 - People Skills:
Common questions, guesthouse behaviour, smoking, analysing complaints, time management.
2 - Running your Business:
Reservation systems, deposits, commissions, general ledgers, business plan, budgeting, banking.
3 - Housekeeping:
Achieving high standards of cleanliness, cleaning routines.
4 - Food & Beverage:
Breakfast menus, techniques of purchasing, liquor licences, organisation, safety, tips for setting the table.
5 - Marketing & Promotions:
Targeting your story, public relations, letterhead, brochures & leaflets, tourist information centres.
Duration: 6 Hours. (Options: over two nights or one full day)

Program of Lectures and Locations

Lectures are staged at VETAB accredited faculties such as Community Colleges, Adult Education Centres and TAFE.
